Proof of recognition as a Higher Education Institution: Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) is a premier social science research institute of Pakistan which was established at Karachi in 1957 and worked as an autonomous research organization. Ph D programs were initiated at PIDE in 2006 along with its research activities and it was granted the status of a degree awarding institution.
PIDE offers Ph. D, M. Phil, MS and M Sc. degrees in Economics, Statistics and Econometrics, Environmental Economics, Health Economics, Business Studies, Development Studies and Public Policy.
PIDE has assisted the Government and Ministries specifically Ministry of Economic Policy and Ministry of Planning and Development and has played a crucial role through its active research in areas like:
• Macroeconomics & Economic Growth
• Governance and Economic Reforms
• Demography Poverty and Labor Dynamics
• Sustainable Development
• Environment and Climate Change
• Monetary Policy
• Poverty Alleviation
It produces its own journal; Pakistan Development Review (PDR); an International peer-reviewed quarterly journal. In addition to the journal PIDE regularly contributes in research through papers by faculty members which are published in various national and international impact factor journals.
Despite being an emergent university PIDE has made its mark in the top ten universities of Pakistan (Higher Education Commission (HEC) Ranking 2015)
Quality of research and academics has been at the fore front of all PIDE’s activities. In this context Quality enhancement Cell (QEC) was established at the behest of Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, and reflected PIDE’s own commitment to quality research and academics.
The application for membership of quality bodies like APQN is one such step towards making PIDE an internationally compatible higher education institution which is alive to the demands of quality enhancement and assurance in higher education.
Establishment of Quality Enhancement Cell as a quality regulatory body at PIDE speaks volumes of PIDE’s earnestness towards building a culture of quality consciousness in all processes of the University especially the teaching learning process. Although QEC at PIDE was established in 2014, the present leadership has infused new life in it by inducting permanent incumbents and staunchly patronizing activities related to quality enhancement and assurance.
A unified effort is being made to maintain quality of processes at the University which includes departmental and institutional reviews. Internal and external evaluation mechanism has been put in place for assessment/audit purposes.
Membership of international bodies like APQN will provide multiple benefits to PIDE as it will firstly enhance the visibility of the institution specifically at international quality forums. It will also provide a good platform for exchange of idea and experiential learning with other office bearers working for quality enhancement in HEIs and quality bodies. Sharing of good practices will become more institutionalized and help in resolving issues that rise while implementing measures of quality enhancement or consequent events.
